Effective and Compassionate Strategies for Low- (and No-) Tech Assessments

Since the arrival of generative AI, more and more faculty are exploring analog approaches in their classrooms. Many are interested in assessing students through low- or no-tech options like oral exams or in-class writing. But students often find these kinds of assessments never-wracking, and they can be tricky to implement effectively. In this session, we’ll share research on oral exams and in-class writing and introduce novel strategies for implementation—including some recently employed by actual UM faculty.
